The man suspected of bombing a fertility clinic in Palm Springs, Calif., was identified Sunday by the FBI.
Cops said Guy Edward Bartkus, 25, detonated a car bomb outside the clinic Saturday morning. Investigators believe Bartkus was the only person killed in the bombing.
“Make no mistake: This is an intentional act of terrorism,” Akil Davis, the head of the FBI’s Los Angeles field office, said Saturday night.
Bartkus wrote a number of ramblings online about his belief that the world should not be populated, investigators said. He lived in Twentynine Palms, about an hour’s drive from Palm Springs. Bartkus was not known to authorities before Saturday’s shocking attack, which rattled Palm Springs.
“The subject had nihilistic ideations and this was a targeted attack,” Davis said. “We believe he was attempting to livestream it and yes, that is also part of our investigation.”
The bomb detonated outside American Reproductive Centers around 11 a.m. on Saturday. The clinic was closed, and Bartkus’ car was the only one in the parking lot, officials said.
Though the building was destroyed, the center’s in vitro fertilization lab and embryos are stored at a different location and were not damaged, the company said. No appointments were scheduled for the weekend.
“I really want to recognize the IVF community,” Palm Springs Police Chief Andy Mills said Sunday. “This is one of those heartbreaking things for many community members who are going through the process of trying to build families.”
